Greetings to all you happy gardeners out there!
As we look at the 10-day forecast for May, the weather is dramatically improving. You know what that means – it’s time to spruce up the backyard. Life is good and the plants at Boyerts are ready to beautify any of those summer projects you are about to start. We have many new introductions waiting for you at Boyerts.
My garden plant patch update: My peas are up and potatoes are peaking through the ground in raised beds. The onions we planted are starting to green up and are standing like little soldiers. Broccoli came through the cold spell, and I am dreaming about them this summer on my plate for dinner. My wife … what a great cook.
Everyone is eager to get their vegetable gardens planted. If you haven’t started your cold crops already, it’s time to plant onions, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, kale, peas, radish, and potatoes. We’ve started bringing up tomatoes from the farm, but keep in mind these plants shouldn’t be planted until after the last spring frost which is projected mid-May this year in our area. We will have 112 tomato varieties, and 90 pepper varieties ranging from sweet to fire-alarm hot. Keep checking Range 1 for new additions.
The questions about how to repel deer are already rolling in. We carry a few products from stakes to spray repellents. We recommend you switch up tactics every few years so the deer don’t become immune. If all else fails, we do carry a natural, potent solution – coyote urine, the scent of a natural predator will frighten off smaller animals including squirrel, chipmunk, skunk and rabbits too.
Lastly, we are fielding questions about hydrangeas. How do I keep the flowers blue? When should I prune? We first answer with a question “What variety do you have?” While all hydrangeas like acidic soil, and we recommend Hollytone if your soil is more alkaline, pruning instructions vary depending upon your plant. For more details, visit our Helpful Handouts listed under the Plants menu on our website or stop-in for a print out and consult.
We are about to jump into our second Early Bird Sale. Trees & Shrubs were a hit and we had much support from the community last week. A very big Thank You goes out to all that supported us in our first sale weekend. Our perennials are here for the next Early Bird Sale. Stop in May 2nd between 6:00am – 10:00am for your plants that will truly add beauty to your landscape.
It’s always a pleasure to see each and every one of you on these Saturday mornings.
Enjoy the sunshine, we deserve it and happy gardening. Live the dream!
Michael & Patti
