Mums in our area (Ohio) are considered tender perennials – which means extra care must be given to ensure survival over the winter months.
Plant early – August or September. Keep watered during dry spells.
Protect mums over winter…cut back plants halfway after flowering, cover plants with 10 – 12″ of soil or compost for winter. Pull back soil in spring (around end of March or 1st of April).
Cut mums back to 8 – 10″ in the end of June to produce a stocky plant with more blooms in the fall.
Fertilize with liquid feed once a week over the summer until August 1.
If this seems like too much trouble, we will be growing a whole new crop of mums for you next fall at a great price!
